Once upon a time, a group of fleas was placed inside a glass jar. The jar had a lid, and every time the fleas tried to jump, they hit the lid with a soft but persistent thud. Again and again, they leaped—only to be stopped short by the unyielding barrier above them.
After a while, something changed.
The fleas stopped hitting the lid. They still jumped—but only high enough to avoid the pain. They learned to live within the invisible boundary the lid had taught them.
Then, one day, someone removed the lid.
The fleas were free.
But they didn’t jump any higher. Not a single one tried to escape the jar. They had learned their limits so well that even without the lid, they stayed confined—trapped not by the jar, but by their own beliefs.
The LessonThis simple story offers a powerful metaphor for our own lives. Like the fleas, we may have experienced obstacles, setbacks, or limitations—some imposed by others, some by circumstances. Over time, we adapt. We stop trying. We settle for less, not because we have to, but because we believe we can’t do more.
But here’s the truth: the lid may be gone. The only thing stopping us from leaping higher… is us.
To grow, we must recognize and challenge these invisible barriers. Step beyond the limits we’ve accepted. Try again. Jump higher.
